The recruiting process can be tedious and confusing. Most recruits seek to play at a university where they will be part of the starting lineup while also belonging to a competitive team with the ability to win. Finding this balance can be challenging. To better serve our clients and provide a clearer understanding of the college recruiting process, Scholarship for Athletes conducted an analysis to compare top level recruiting. The analysis was based off a sample size of 232 (116 Girls and 116 Boys) 4-star college tennis recruits, now players at the end of their freshman year. These individuals, previously 4-star recruits in the class of 2011, were studied to see if they made the lineup of their respective colleges throughout the majority of their seasons.
This data shows that for a 4-star boy the chances of being recruited by a team in the top 75 are quite low (28/116; 24%). Furthermore the vast majority of the 4-stars who did end up at schools ranked in the top 75 missed the lineup and spent most of their time on the sidelines. Of the 4-star boys, 6/116 (5.1%) started for Division 1 schools that were ranked inside the top 75. On the other hand, the remaining Division 1 players who choose non-ranked universities or Division 2/3 schools had about a 44% better chance of making their starting lineup as a freshman.
