In her young life, Emina Bektas has lived in Germany, Indianapolis, and the Texas Hill Country.
Next year, she will make one more trip, to Ann Arbor, Mich. Emina plans to become a member of the
Michigan Wolverines women's tennis team - and she plans to sign her National Letter of Intent this week.
"I gave a verbal commitment the day after I visited Michigan," said Emina, who trains at the John Newcombe Tennis Academy in New Braunfels, Texas (just north of San Antonio). "As soon as I got to Ann Arbor, it felt so right. I felt at home with the team, and the campus and facilities are absolutely amazing.
"Also, there's nothing like the tradition at Michigan. I'm a sports junkie, and being able to go to a game at the Big House, and experience the atmosphere that's on campus was unreal."
The Maize and Blue are led by fourth-year head coach Ronni Bernstein, a former women's touring pro (as Reis), and University of Miami standout. Last season, Michigan won the Big Ten title with perfect 10-0 record. Coach Bernstein was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for her efforts. The Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Coach Bernstein cannot comment on her new charge, since Emina has not officially signed the Letter of Intent. But, she is able to express a great pride in the Michigan program.
"Michigan affords the student-athlete a great mix of academics and athletics," coach Bernstein said. "I'm excited what our players have accomplished these past few years. I think what has made us successful is we have a hard working group that competes each and every day. We also have a bunch of girls who get along so well, and that makes coaching here fun."
