Top Prospect: Jarmere Jenkins
by
Colette Lewis, 24 January 2008
Jarmere Jenkins grew up learning from his four older tennis-playing brothers, taking the best parts of their games as motivation to improve his own.
"I tried to take something that they'd do better than I did and try to do it better than them," says the 17-year-old Jenkins, of College Park, Ga. "My oldest brother (Jackie Jr.) has a big serve, the second one (Jarmaine) has nice ground strokes, the third (Terrance) has a lot of spin and the fourth (Richard) is strong mentally."
Jenkins has melded these qualities into a game that has made him one of the top juniors nationally and internationally and his rankings reflect it; he is No. 2 in the Tennis Recruiting Network's class of 2009 and is No. 24 in the ITF world junior rankings.
Right now however, Jenkins is concentrating on the Pro Circuit, the lowest level of professional tennis. Three Futures events in Florida this month took precedence over the Australian Open junior championships, especially since two of them were within driving distance of his base at the USTA National Training Center at the IMG Evert Academy in Boca Raton.
"I'm mainly on the road all the time," says Jenkins, who competed in ten Futures and nine junior tournaments in 2007. "But after the tournaments, I come back to Evert's."
