Tennis eases into its off-season in November, at least on the Tour level, but the opportunity to start 2020 on a positive note keeps those striving to move up competing throughout the month. Current and former collegians had impressive results, while a pair of young French players made their mark on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
Sara Daavettila
The University of North Carolina senior earned her first title at a collegiate major last month at the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, California. The 21-year-old from Michigan, seeded No. 8, defeated reigning NCAA champion Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami to reach the final, then avenged a recent loss to University of Texas senior Anna Turati with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) decision in the final. Yuya Ito
The University of Texas senior was an Ace in October for his first ITA major title at the All-American Championships in Tulsa, and he quickly doubled his title count at the Fall National Championships in Newport Beach. The 22-year-old from Japan, the top seed in the tournament, defeated unseeded Damon Kesaris of St. Mary’s 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the final, becoming the first player to win both the All-American Championships and the Fall Nationals (formerly the Intercollegiate Indoor Championships) in the same year since University of Virginia's Mitchell Frank won both in 2011. Ito also received the ITA Sportsmanship Award. (Photo credit: ITA)
