With the Covid-19 pandemic calling for flexibility and innovation by tennis governing bodies, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association has introduced a new 10-week fall tour based on its well-established Summer Circuit.
The ITA Tour Fall Circuit by UTR begins today at 11 sites throughout the country, with over 160 additional tournaments scheduled through November. The two- or three-day weekend events are open to any player—junior, college or professional—seeking organized competition to fill gaps in the junior and collegiate calendars.
As a result of the pandemic, the number of events on the ITA Summer Circuit was approximately half the usual number, due to many college campuses being closed. That led the ITA to seek out other tennis facilities during those seven weeks this summer, and it has continued to add new venues this fall.
“We really think the ITA was a leader in the sports world,” said Tim Russell, CEO of the ITA. “We really were the first competition that happened in the summer, and based on the success of the summer, that led us to believe that the fall would work.”
