Eala, a 17-year-old left-hander from the Philippines, drew enthusiastic support throughout the tournament from New York's Filipino community. In her quest to become the first from her country to win a junior singles slam, Eala also benefited from being in the top half of the draw, which, unlike the bottom half, did not have to make up for Tuesday's washout by playing two singles matches on Wednesday.
Eala's opponent in the final, No. 2 seed and reigning Roland Garros girls champion Lucie Havlickova of the Czech Republic, twice played three matches in one day due to her success in doubles, and in Eala's 6-2, 6-4 victory in the final, there was no question the No. 10 seed was the fresher player.
