Notes

The table above lists all recruits as of May 21, 2023. In addition to the Star Rating, we display the highest TRN and ITF junior rankings - as well as the best UTR and World Tennis Number (WTN) ratings - for the 6-month period prior to the voting. For international players we display the TRN ranking they would hold if eligible.

Also Receiving Consideration

We reviewed the resumes for more than 50 teams for these rankings. Teams that received strong consideration and almost made our list are (alphabetically) as follows:  Connecticut, Denver, Gonzaga, Milwaukee, MIT, Montana State, Nevada, Quinnipiac, St. Francis (PA), UC Davis, UTSA, Villanova, William & Mary, Xavier

Night of the Owl

Rice University completed a chapter of its athletic history in 2022-23. In July, the Owls officially move from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference. For the women’s tennis program, the move will come with an influx of talent.

Rice Head Coach Elizabeth Schmidt brings a pair of strong recruits to Houston this fall, including Blue Chip senior Anushka Ashar of Boca Raton, Fla., and international standout Divna Ratkovic of Montenegro. Ashar, who holds a gold ball in doubles from the Winter Nationals, has won four USTA Level 3 National titles. Ratkovic brings a wealth of international experience - winning multiple ITF singles and doubles titles as well as representing Montenegro in Federation Cup play.

Our panel of college coaches took note of this duo - naming them the No. 1 mid-major class in college tennis.

“Both of these young women are great fits for our tennis program,” said Schmidt. “We can’t wait to get them onto campus this August.”

High Five

There were two teams that stood out at the top - and our panel was divided about the No. 1 spot. The VCU Rams check in at No. 2 on our list, although many on our panel tabbed them as No. 1.

VCU Head Coach Vivian Segnini has attracted four strong international recruits that all have UTRs in the 9.3 - 9.9 range. Emma Rizzetto (Italy), Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando (Ecuador), Mariam Hatem Ibrahim (Egypt) and Tiziana Rossini (Argentina) will all be in Richmond, Va., this fall.

FIU Head Coach Maryna Veksler has her own powerhouse trio coming to Miami, headlined by Petja Drame (Slovenia) who has a UTR of 10.2. Drame will be joined by Kristyna Hranacova of the Czech Republic and Aleksandra Simeva of North Macedonia.

Rounding out our Top 5 are the Lipscomb Bisons and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at No. 4 and 5 on our list, respectively.

Conference Call

The 25 recruiting classes in our rankings hail from 16 different conferences, with no conference holding more than three classes. The AAC, Atlantic 10, Conference USA, and Patriot League each have classes on our list.

Rice (No. 1) is joined in our list by fellow AAC members North Texas (12) and Memphis (20). No. 2 VCU represents the Atlantic 10 along with Fordham (11) and George Washington (19). Conference USA teams in our rankings are FIU (3), Liberty (14), and Louisiana Tech (25). Boston University (8), Navy (18), and Army (24) all represent the the Patriot League.

Drop Shots

Scattershooting through the rankings …

  • For the Commonwealth - 15 states and the District of Columbia have teams in our rankings - but no state has more than Virginia. VCU (No. 2) is joined in our rankings by the Old Dominion Monarchs (10) and Liberty Flames (14).
  • Top Marks - 2023 marks the third year that Rice (1) had the No. 1 recruiting class among mid-major programs, and the first since 2021.
  • Year After Year - The BU Terriers (8) lead all programs with 14 appearances on our mid-major list over the years. Other programs with 10 or more appearances are the North Texas Mean Green (No. 12, 11 appearances), Army Black Knights (No. 24, 11 appearances), FIU Panthers (No. 3, 10 appearances), and Furman Paladins (No. 9, 10 appearances).
  • Half and Half - 12 of the 25 programs in our rankings - almost half - also had a ranked class in 2022. VCU (2), FIU (3), Lipscomb (4), UCSB (5), Georgetown (6), BU (8), ODU (10), North Texas (12), Navy (18), Memphis (20), Elon (22), and Army (24) have all strung together back-to-back ranked classes.
  • Streaking - 2023 marks the 10th straight year that the Florida International Panthers (3) have had a ranked class. No other school has had more than 5 consecutive appearances.
  • Grand Debut - Four programs have ranked recruiting classes for the first time in their school’s history. The Seattle Redhawks make their debut all the way up at No. 7, and they are joined as first-timers by the Fordham Rams (11), Grand Canyon Antelopes (13), and Sacramento State Hornets (16). Congratulations and welcome aboard!
  • Historic Haul - In addition to the four programs making their debut, two programs have their highest-rated classes in school history. VCU and Lipscomb - at No. 2 and 4, respectively - have historic classes.
