Spring Signing Week '15: Alexis Nelson from Twin Cities Heads West

Her junior year not quite over, Alexis Nelson has made a verbal commitment to play for the University of California, Berkeley.

Alexis Nelson is heading to California
"A lot of tennis players are committing early," Nelson said. "Since it's so competitive to get a spot at such a great school, I wanted to make sure I got in. I wanted to get the ball rolling, to have options, and not have to wait till the last minute."

An unofficial visit to Cal helped make her choice easier. She also did her homework and gathered information about the other schools in which she was most interested, including Stanford, North Carolina and LSU.

"Everything just seemed to fall into place at Cal," said the 16-year-old champion from St. Paul, Minnesota. "I just love the coaches, the facility, the team and then I was able to meet a lot of the people who work behind the scenes, like the advisers, so I got a really good feel for the school. I can see myself doing well there."

David Nelson, Alexis' father and coach, said that "Cal is a great fit for Lexi. The coaches, team, trainers and academic people are all world class."

Alexis has a solid background in math and the sciences, and initially planned to pursue a career in kinesiology, sports medicine or biology. With Cal's outstanding academic reputation and its diverse course offerings and majors, however, she's reconsidering her career path.

"My options are completely open," she said.

Nelson, who will turn 17 in August, will arrive at Cal in Fall 2016 with an already loaded tennis résumé: gold, silver and bronze USTA balls, TennisRecruiting.net high ranking of fourth in the class of 2016, an ITF Juniors high ranking of 681, as well as a ITF Women's Circuit doubles ranking of 810, singles of 1203.

At age 15, she won her first pro circuit doubles title, along with CiCi Bellis, at the Orlando 10K in 2014. Nelson also has been honored with numerous national and local sportsmanship awards.
