Fall Signing Week '15: Hoffmann Stays Close to Home at Cal
Share:

Elite Southern California tennis players looking to play at the college level have a built-in advantage. Their search can be concentrated fairly close to home because so many attractive options are located right in the Southland - not to mention others elsewhere in the state.

Bjorn Hoffmann has committed to California
Bjorn Hoffmann is a lifelong Southern Californian who opted to keep the recruiting process close to home. After making only a handful of unofficial visits the Newport Beach, Calif., resident recently announced his decision by making a verbal commitment to the University of California at Berkeley.

The blue-chip recruit couldn't be happier the way everything turned out.

"[Cal] had everything you would look for... a school where I could check off most of the boxes," said Hoffmann, a 17-year-old senior at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach. "Strong tennis program, PAC-12, one of the best academic schools in the nation."

Hoffman wound up making only four unofficial visits during the recruiting process. In addition to UC Berkeley, Hoffman also made unofficial visits to Stanford, UC Santa Barbara and the University of San Diego.

"The whole process was moving along swiftly," said Hoffman, who plans to take an official visit to Berkeley in October even though he has already verbally committed. "Cal finally became my top choice. The opportunity presented itself and I jumped on it."

Another person taking an active part in the recruiting process was Hoffman's father and coach, Carsten, a former college standout at UC Irvine Naturally, Hoffman explored UCI (Carsten's college teammate Trevor Kroneman coaches the Anteaters) in addition to Boise State.

While schools like UC Irvine and USD were certainly attractive, Hoffmann is excited about his choice.

"It was far enough to get away without being too far, just a one-hour flight from home," Hoffmann said. "Plus the city, culture. And the coaches are awesome as are the guys on the team."
