As the school year comes to a close, junior players are finding more time to get out on the court. Many are turning up the heat to go along with the skyrocketing temperatures. We checked in with a few of these players in this month's PlaySight Hot 100.

The PlaySight Hot 100 lists are published each month, and the June Hot 100 lists feature the one hundred boys and girls who most improved their rankings during the month of May. You can find out more about the PlaySight Hot 100 - and how the lists are calculated - by reading here.

Maggie Cubitt (Spartanburg, S.C.)

Five-star rising sophomore Maggie Cubitt credits her recent growth on the tennis court to a surge of motivation. "I would say that I have worked extremely hard in the last few weeks and brought a new, more determined attitude to tournaments," she said. "I wanted to do as well as possible while trying not to put too much pressure on me and my results."

The development of Cubitt's mental game has allowed her to achieve high results. "I try to keep a positive attitude on the court. I have worked very hard at this. I feel a good attitude leads to good play while a bad attitude will lead to poor play - which has happened to me," she said. One strategy Cubitt uses to achieve a positive attitude is humming or singing during matches in order to relax.

Cubitt used these strategies at what she considers her best recent match. She played blue chip freshman Chloe Beck in the quarterfinals of the USTA National Selection Tournament in Fort Myers, FL. Although she started strong, quickly getting up 5-3, she lost the first set.

"I could have thrown in the towel, but I was more determined than ever to give all I had," Cubitt said. She ended up winning in three sets, 5-7; 6-3; 6-0, and went on to become the champion of this USTA tournament.

Also in May, Cubitt won the Alabama Spring State Championships in Birmingham, bringing her total record for May to 9-0 and launching her into the top 50 of the Class Rankings.

Cubitt's father, Jamie Cubitt, believes that the benefits of tennis for his daughter are not limited to athletic success.

"I think Maggie loves tennis, but also all of the things that come with it - the great friends she has made and the chance to travel as well as compete as an individual and on teams," Jamie Cubitt said. "We are most proud of her as she juggles going to high school, being a teenager, tennis practice, extracurricular school activities and tennis travel, while being a fun, loving, level-headed child."

These factors will be important for Cubitt as she considers a college tennis experience. "I have begun to think about colleges," she said. "I would love to play college tennis where the team feels like family - a family that works hard and competes hard but has a fun time doing it."
