Ohio State was nowhere to be found on Cannon Kingsley’s original list of schools he considered playing for in college.
The blue chip junior from Northport, New York had a different region of the country in mind when he began exploring his options more than year ago.
“I was looking more toward Southern schools as I started the recruiting process. I didn’t really know much about Ohio State,” Kingsley said. “It was kind of in the back of mind that if the coach reaches out to me I may take a look. He reached out to me the first day, and Ohio State ended up being the first visit I took.”
The Buckeyes and head coach Ty Tucker made a lasting impression. Kingsley committed to Ohio State last week and may consider enrolling early.
“I love the coach a lot and I love the guys on the team. They are all really hard workers and want to play pro tennis and that is what I want to do,” Kingsley said. “It really came down to smaller things overall. I am super happy I decided on Ohio State.”
Kingsley didn’t have a deadline for making his college decision. But after suffering a stress fracture in his foot in late November, he channeled his energy into setting a plan for his future.
“I had a lot of time the last month to think about college and take visits,” said Kingsley, who visited 12 schools overall. “I just wanted to get the decision out of the way and focus more on training and playing tournaments once my foot healed and not so much on visits with my schedule.”
