Notes

The table above lists all recruits as of May 21, 2023. In addition to the Star Rating, we display the highest TRN and ITF junior rankings - as well as the best UTR and World Tennis Number (WTN) ratings - for the 6-month period prior to the voting. For international players we display the TRN ranking they would hold if eligible.

Also Receiving Consideration

We reviewed the resumes for more than 50 teams for these rankings. Teams that received strong consideration and almost made our list are (alphabetically) as follows:  Amherst, Army, Binghamton, Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, Chattanooga, Chicago, Dayton, Delaware, Mississippi College, Portland, Wofford, Xavier

Tidal Waves

The Pepperdine men’s tennis program had an excellent showing in 2023. After winning its first WCC title in 10 years, the Waves advanced to its third straight NCAA Tournament, reaching the second round of the Austin Regional before falling to top-seeded Texas. Pepperdine loses its two senior leaders - Daniel De Jonge and Tim Zeitvogel - but the 2023-24 squad is getting some help from the recruiting trail.

Waves Head Coach Adam Schaechterle is bringing in a four-man class that should make an immediate impact. Five-star senior Kurt Miller of Los Gatos, Calif., will be joined by strong international recruits Edward Winter (Australia), Alessio Vasquez Gehrke (Germany), and Photos Photiades (Cyprus).

Miller’s highlights include winning a round at the 2022 US Open Juniors and a singles title at the ITF J3 in Copa Indervale. Winter, the Australian national junior player of the year in 2022, brings ATP ranking highs of 663 (singles) and 383 (doubles) to Malibu. Vasquez Gehrke and Photiades, who have also competed in ITF junior and professional tournaments, round out the group.

Coach Schaechterle is understandably excited about this group.

“We are excited about all of these players, and we look forward to seeing them grow on the court and in the classroom during their college years,” said Schaechterle. “These young men will have a great impact on our program.”

Give Me Five

Another recruiting class that caught the eye of college coaches is the trio from Liberty University.

Three-time USTA ball-winner Chase Robinson of Greeneville, S.C., is heading to Lynchburg - and he will be joined by international recruits Dung Em Oliver Dao (Slovak Republic) and Matija Samardzic (Montenegro). Checking in at No. 2 on our list, 2023 marks the first time Liberty has a recruiting class ranked in the Top 10 on our mid-major rank list.

At No. 3 on our list is the Old Dominion Monarchs. Namibian recruit Connor Henry Van Schalkwyk participated in all four 2022 Junior Grand Slam tournaments, while Aryan Saleh was a top 5 junior in Germany.

Rounding out our top five are strong classes from Florida Atlantic and UNC Wilmington. The Owls and Seahawks check in at No. 4 and 5, respectively.

Conference Call

The 25 programs in our rankings come from 13 different conferences - with the American Athletic Conference leading the way.

The AAC is the only conference with four recruiting classes in our rankings. Florida Atlantic leads the way, and the Owls are joined in the Top 10 by the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at No. 6. Other AAC conferences on the list are the SMU Mustangs (No. 15) and Rice Owls (19).

The only other conferences with more than two ranked classes are the Big West and Sun Belt - with three ranked classes apiece.

Drop Shots

Scattershooting through the rankings …

  • Golden Commonwealth - 15 states are represented in our rankings, with two states standing out above the rest. California and Virginia each have five ranked classes - and they are the only states with more than 2 classes on the list. California classes include Pepperdine (No. 1), Cal Poly (12), Santa Clara (17), UC Davis (18), and UCSD (24). Virginia classes on our list are Liberty (2), Old Dominion (3), VCU (8), William & Mary (21), and Richmond (25).
  • Back to Back - Only six programs on our rank list were ranked on our mid-major list last year. Pepperdine (1), Old Dominion (3), Jacksonville State (10), Furman (13), Troy (16), and Rice (19) all have ranked classes in both 2022 and 2023.
  • Streaking - Pepperdine has been the most consistent on the recruiting trail with five straight ranked classes - more than any other school.
  • Sailing Straight - Navy (20) has appeared in more of our mid-major ranking lists than any other school. This is the 11th time the Midshipmen have had a ranked class.
  • Welcome Aboard - 2023 marks the first time that the VCU Rams (8) and Bellarmine Knights (22) have had ranked classes. Congratulations to Head Coaches Anthony Rossi and Will Davis on these historic accomplishments.
  • Best Ever - Three more schools have posted the highest-ever rankings in school history - Liberty (2), Old Dominion (3), and Northern Arizona (9).
