Wesley McClure (WTN 15.6) was visiting Division I colleges on the East Coast last summer when he first detected the change. It had been McClure’s goal to play at that level since he first started playing tennis. But as he contemplated his future goals beyond the court, McClure realized his outlook had changed.

“I just didn’t feel like I would be too happy there. I felt like it wouldn’t be the balance that I wanted,” he said. “So, I started expanding my choices and figured out that Division III would probably be where I would be most happy.”
Location was important to McClure, a four-star senior from Little Rock, Arkansas. He wanted to remain close to home and find a small college where he could get a good balance among tennis, his personal life and academics.
He believes he found the perfect fit at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. McClure is the highest-rated recruit to commit to Hendrix since Tennis Recruiting Network began the star system. The previous best was a two-star recruit.
“He is a tremendous player with loads of talent,” Hendrix head coach Craig Kirchgessner said. “I believe Wesley choosing Hendrix showcases how impactful the Hendrix experience can be and how being a part of something on the rise is exciting.”
McClure’s parents are both graduates of Hendrix. Although he always knew about the college, it was never on his radar for college until he began speaking with Kirchgessner in October.
“I was looking at big D1s and working towards that,” McClure said. “But once D3 became a consideration, Hendrix sparked my interest.”
