Jiarui Zhang and Daniela Del Mastro emerged as the Boys and Girls 12s singles champions at the USTA Winter National Championships at the University of Texas at San Antonio Tennis Center.

The boys singles final was an all-Texas matchup as the fifth-seeded Zhang (Houston) defeated top seed Tristan Ascenzo (Dallas) in a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 battle. Top-seeded Del Mastro (Maple Grove, Minnesota) defeated No. 2 Nikol Davletshina (Boca Raton, Florida) 6-1, 6-1 in the girls final.

“I told myself to try my best and whatever happens, happens, and to go as hard as I can,” said Del Mastro, who earlier won a gold ball in doubles at the 12s USTA Indoors. “My backhand down the line was really good this tournament, along with my forehand short-angle and my backhand return.”
