Playing college tennis became a realistic possibility in Brandon Farmer’s mind during his sophomore year at South Garner High in North Carolina.
Between USTA, UTR and his high school matches, Farmer noticed his results steadily improving.

“I began to gain more confidence in my tennis and saw that I could really beat other people who I used to think could beat me,” Farmer said. “Once I started winning, I thought my skill level was good enough to take a step up and play in college.”
Farmer wanted to play at an HBCU with a strong biology program. He reached out to Virginia State University head coach Chavez Mabry. The Division II program is located in Petersburg, Virginia.
“He had looked at my video on my NCSA profile and liked how I played,” Farmer said. “I ended up visiting the school and he guided me through a tour. I loved the campus and the way it looked. It was the best HBCU I had seen in person.”
Farmer has signed with the Trojans, and Mabry attended the senior’s signing event at South Garner in person.
