Max McKennon really didn’t have his eye on Arizona State as an option for college But he noticed the Sun Devils had their eyes on him.

Last August at USTA Boys 16 National Championships, McKennon spotted ASU head coach Matt Hill at every one of his matches. Hill didn’t just make an appearance. He stayed from the first point to the very last shot.

Once September 1st rolled around and coaches could begin contacting McKennon, Hill was the first to reach out to the blue-chip rising senior from Newport Beach, California.

“From then on, he always kept up with me and never really backed down,” McKennon said. “A few of the coaches said they were interested and would stop talking for a couple of months and then text back. But he was always on top of it and texting me and calling me to see how I was doing. I really enjoyed how much he cared about me.”

The deeper commitment level from ASU led to McKennon to commit to the Sun Devils. He visited five schools - ASU, UCLA, Stanford, TCU and Baylor - and ASU was his third visit.

“I just kind of fell in love with the whole situation there,” McKennon said. “I loved everything about the program and the campus. They have a very good business school, which also caught my attention. I just knew it was the right place for me.”
