Impact of COVID-19 on TRN Rankings

Since our launch in 2004, TRN has always based its rankings on a 12-month (or 52-week) rolling window of match play. Every week, new match results are added from the past week that replace results that drop off from the previous year. The annual cycle of junior tennis competition - where most tournaments are held the same week each year - is the motivation for the 12-month rolling window.
Fast forward to Spring 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily broken the annual cycle. The USTA has suspended competition to stop the virus spread, and there are no new match results. Our 12-month window of match results has been shrinking since mid-March.
New Process - Extending the Window for TRN Rankings
Since tennis competition has been suspended for an indefinite period of time, we have decided to extend the TRN ranking window to maintain 12 months of results while competition is suspended. Our ranking window this week will start on March 11, 2019, and we will hold that start date until play resumes - growing our ranking window each week during the suspension.
For example, if competition resumes after May 31, we would end up with a 12 week suspension of play, and so our ranking window will include 52 + 12 = 64 weeks for the next calendar year. After a year using this window, we can seamlessly resume the normal 52 week calendar.
Frequent Questions
Q: Are the rankings frozen?
A: Kind of. The rankings will still be run weekly, and the lists may change slightly as we correct or update data. For example, we have entered additional results and made corrections that were not available during the final week of competition in March. We also added several team tournaments after the suspension of play.
Q: How big is the rankings window now?
A: During the suspension, we will keep adding one week to the ranking window so that the window starts the week of March 11, 2019.
Q: When will this change take effect?
A: In the rankings published the first week of May (this week).
