Gea was playing his first tournament since the US Open, after he was forced to retire from his third round match with an abdominal tear. In his first match at the Eddie Herr, he lost his opening set, then claimed three straight-sets victories before another obstacle appeared prior to his semifinal with No. 7 seed Iliyan Radulov of Bulgaria. Suffering from a gastrointestinal illness, Gea had to take an inopportune toilet break up 6-2, 5-2. He lost the second set upon his return, but came through with a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4 victory.
