College Commitment Countdown: Pine Brothers Stick Together by Sonny Dearth, 2 April 2008
Special from the
Newport News (Va.) Daily Press, HRVarsity.com Charles Pine could see the logistical nightmares coming.
With twin sons who are NCAA Division I-caliber players, he wondered what would happen if they attended different universities.
Maybe he'd go watch one son play on a weekend while his wife, Leslie, watched the other. How about driving, or even plane tickets? Shuttling back and forth?
But he won't have to worry about that. Jonathan and Zachary Pine of Vienna, Va., who turned 18 in October, elected to stay in-state and attend Virginia Tech.
"As parents, we prefer them going to the same school," Charles said. "I was getting e-mails and calls from coaches who'd watched one but not the other. Some of the coaches wanted one of them but didn't need both of them."
The twins from Northern Virginia have the credentials to make a Division I impact. Jonathan is 117th on TennisRecruiting.net's national class rankings, 25th in the Mid-Atlantic Section and third in Virginia. Zachary is slightly higher, at 103rd, 21st and second.
