Maroon Made
In women's college tennis, UChicago is on a remarkable streak. Over the past three years, the Maroons have secured three UAA Conference Tournament Titles and reached the NCAA Team Final each year, culminating in their first-ever NCAA Division III National Title last month.
The future looks bright for Head Coach Jay Tee as well. This fall, Chicago is welcoming the No. 1 recruiting class in Division III. The four-woman class includes 5-star prospect Clara Zou (Potomac, Md.) as well as 4-star athletes Isabelle Chong (Lake Forest, Ill.), Charlotte Klein (Bethesda, Md.), and Ariana Liu (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), unanimously chosen for the top spot.
Zou anchors the No. 1 singles position for Sidwell Friends School in Bethesda, Md., which is ranked fourth in the nation by UTR Sports. She competes at the highest level of USTA tournaments, having won four combined singles matches in last year’s USTA Clay Court and Hard Court Nationals. Chong has been a standout for her Lake Forest team, winning back-to-back state doubles titles in her sophomore and junior years and finishing fifth in singles this season. Klein has earned All-Independent School League honors every year at Holton-Arms School, while Liu posted three wins at the USTA National Clay Court Championships last summer.
Tee’s 2024 recruiting haul continues a remarkable run for Tee and the Chicago coaching staff. Chicago has now had the No. 1 recruiting class in NCAA Division III for three of the past four years, earning the top spot in 2021, 2022 and now 2024.
“We're extremely thrilled to welcome this class to Hyde Park next fall,” said Tee. “In addition to being accomplished junior players, each member of the class is truly excited about studying at The University of Chicago and also helping to add to the legacy of the women's tennis team.”
Give Me Five
Johns Hopkins University has an impressive trio of recruits arriving in Baltimore this fall, all of whom have been ranked in the Top 100 nationally. This group has garnered the No. 2 spot in our rankings.
The highest-ranked Blue Jay recruit is 5-star athlete Sahana Sanjeev from Lutz, Fla. Sanjeev, of Indian descent, has excelled in ITF events, winning multiple singles championships in 2023, including the title at the J60 Santa Tecla in San Salvador. She is joined by 4-star recruit Ava Li from Forest Hills, N.Y., who won the singles title at a Level 4 Open in Mountainside, N.J. over the New Year’s break and secured a singles win at the USTA Clay Court Nationals. Rounding out the JHU class is 4-star recruit Sahana Madala from St. Louis, Mo., who has consistently performed well throughout the Missouri Valley section.
The MIT Engineers rank No. 3 on our list for the second consecutive year. Head Coach Carol Matsuzaki is welcoming a strong recruiting class to Cambridge, including 5-star senior Fiona Lee (Ladera Ranch, Calif.), 4-stars Megan Sun (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Chloe Zeng (Austin, Texas), and 3-star Anselma Petrie (Scarsdale, N.Y.).
The Washington University Bears and Tufts Jumbos round out our Top 5 in the No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively.
Conference Call
The recruiting classes in our rankings come from nine different conferences, with the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) leading the pack with six Top 25 classes, including four in the Top 10. Tufts leads the way with the No. 5 class, followed by the Middlebury Panthers (No. 7), Amherst Mammoths (8), Wesleyan Cardinals (10), Bowdoin Polar Bears (21), and Colby Mules (23).
The SCIAC and UAA are next in line with four ranked classes apiece.
