Current and Former Collegians Highlight Last Month's Standouts
Share:

Current and former collegians provide the bulk of a dozen highlights from the first month of the decade, but young competitors from ages 13 to 18 also chalked up notable results last month, including the year’s first junior slam champions.

Alexander Razeghi

The 13-year-old left-hander from Texas swept the titles at the Tennis Europe Teen Tennis International tournament in Bolton, England last month. Seeded No. 9 in singles, Razeghi didn’t drop a set in his five victories, defeating unseeded Nikita Filin, also of the United States, 6-3, 6-0 in the final. In addition, Razeghi partnered with Mitchell Lee to take the doubles championship, with the No. 8 seeds winning another all-US battle in the final, a 6-4, 6-4 decision over No. 4 seeds Filin and Kaylan Bigun. Razeghi also reached the singles semifinals of the prestigious Les Petits As tournament last week in France.

Alexa Noel

After skipping the major year-end International Tennis Federation junior tournaments, the 17-year-old from New Jersey returned to competition late last month and claimed her first ITF World Tennis Tour title at a $15,000 tournament in Cancun, Mexico, despite being unseeded. The 2019 Wimbledon girls singles finalist, currently No. 4 in the ITF junior rankings, didn’t drop a set throughout the event, beating top seed and 2018 NCAA singles champion Arianne Hartono of the Netherlands in the quarterfinals and No. 5 seed Nika Kukharchuk of Russia 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
